Anthropic retunes Claude Fable 5's biology safeguards, cutting biology-related fallbacks 85%

Anthropic narrowed Fable 5's biology-safety classifier on Aug 7 so it stops blocking benign questions — interpreting lab results, explaining symptoms, general biology homework — while continuing to fall back to Opus 5 on dual-use requests around virology, toxicology, and molecular design. In testing, biology-related fallbacks dropped by about 85%, with total fallback reductions of roughly 67% on Claude.ai, 55% on Cowork, 17% on Claude Code, and 7% on the Claude Platform. Anthropic says it consulted a range of internal and external experts before moving the classifier boundary.
